Sheep play an important role in Islamic heritage; our prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) was a shepherd.
According to our holy book, the Quran, when Abraham (pbuh) was about to sacrifice Ishmael (pbuh), a ram was sacrificed as a substitute.
Eid al-Adha is a major annual festival in Islam in which sheep (or other animals) are sacrificed in remembrance of this act. Eid Al-Adha is due to occur on September 24th, 2015.
Sheep are also occasionally sacrificed to commemorate important secular events, such as births or weddings, in Arab cultures.
